Effinger Family Exhibit and Leeches in the Georgian? Could It Be True?

Yes, it is true. During the recent Campfire to Courthouse week leeches that were "captured" by brave Judy Smith, then fed and nurtured by Will Blind were on display in the Goslin Room. Why you might ask? A special exhibit about the Effinger Family featured a porcelain leech jar used in Dr. Michael Effinger's office. Leeches were used by early doctors to treat infection and have recently found favor with today's medical professionals.

You may be glad or sad to learn the leeches have moved on but the Effinger Family exhibit will remain until July 14th. The admission fee to tour the museum includes this special exhibit.

Samuel Effinger was born in Virginia and came to Lancaster in 1813. He was a coppersmith and tin manufacturer, and completed his house in 1823. It stood on the property where Shaw's Restaurant & Inn stand today.
