Visitors to Lancaster, Ohio marvel at Samuel Maccracken's 1832 restored mansion, now The Georgian Museum. It has been restored to its original architectural grandeur and furnished with exceptional period pieces. Many of the antique furnishings were owned by the Maccracken Family and others were made by Fairfield County's master craftsmen.

An exhibit of Erickson Glass, formerly made in Bremen, Ohio, is availabe for viewing.

This historic house was built by Daniel Sifford using Asher Benjamin's Handbook for Carpenters and represents the best of American and Georgian architecture.

The Georgian Museum gift shop provides an opportunity to purchase unusual gifts and hard-to-find books.


 
Sherman House Museum

The Sherman House Museum, the birthplace of Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman, his brother U.S. Senator John Sherman, and many of their siblings, is a Registered National Historic Landmark and on the Civil War Discovery Trail.

Mary Hoyt married Charles Sherman and moved from Connecticut into a little, brown saltbox house near downtown Lancaster in 1811.

The museum contains three rooms of their original house and offers Civil War exhibits and artifacts of Fairfield County, Ohio, and national history, along with Sherman Family memorabilia.

A gift shop in the Sherman House Museum features books on Sherman and the Civil War.

The Fairfield Heritage Association (FHA) presents special fundraising events throughout the year in order to operate its two historic museums. A living history walk, house tour, cemetery tour, high tea, and candlelight tour of historic churches every December are some of the events offered.

Throughout the year, visitors may enjoy a taped walking tour of one of downtown Lancaster's original blocks, a National Register Historic District, that has been called one of the finest collections of 19th century architecture in a concentrated area in the nation. Visitors to downtown Lancaster will also enjoy the Ohio Glass Museum, the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio, antique shops and unique restaurants.
