Lancaster resident Phyllis Gilmore donated
figures and
furniture carved by
Columbus folk artist
Elijah Pierce to FHA
in 2000. Gilmore
gathered and
arranged the pieces
in a house nearly
six feet tall. The
Pierce house is just
one of many
impressive
dollhouses and
miniatures displayed
on the second floor
of the Georgian
Museum.
Born in 1892, Pierce migrated north from
Mississippi and
opened a barbershop
in Columbus in 1951.
He carved many of
his wooden pieces
between customers,
and received
national recognition
before his death in
1984.

Alan Jones portrayed
Elijah Pierce in a
one-man play at CATO
during April titled:
Pierce to the Soul.
He traveled to
Lancaster between
performances to view
woodcarvings by
Pierce at the
Georgian Museum.
Jones (kneeling) is
shown with James
Gilmore. Gilmore's
mother, Phyllis,
donated the items to
the Fairfield
Heritage Association
in 2000. Jones is
shown portraying
Pierce in Columbus
shortly after a
performance. Peggy
Ziegler (standing
left) and Bernie
Baker were among 30
FHA volunteers who
attended the play.
